The River Mel
| The Mel is a chalk river originating from the springs at Melbourn Bury, outside of the Riverside Park. These rivers are very clear as they are fed by spring water that has been filtered through the surrounding chalk. The water levels in the River Mel can fall during periods of extended drought as the chalk aquifer runs low. However, winter rainfall can recharge water levels and steady flows return to the river. The marsh habitats next to the river provide reed and sedge beds which in turn attract birds such as reed and sedge warblers. The vegetation has to be periodically cleared from the River Mel and the shallow ponds, to prevent marsh from taking over the open water. The Wild Brown Trout and White Clawed Crayfish (the only species of crayfish native to the British Isles) can be seen in the river. |
