The Group

The River Mel Restoration Group was formed in late 2005 with the following objectives:

  • To maintain and enhance the characteristic habitats, plants and animals of the River Mel
  • To improve the water quality, flows and habitat diversity
  • To identify and implement cost-effective means of restoring damaged sections of the River Mel

Our aim is to improve the biodiversity of the river from the “bottom up”.

For this to happen it is crucial to speed the flow of the river so as to clear the silt and reveal more of the naturally chalky and stoney river bed.

Our plans were to install gravel riffles to improve breeding grounds for brown trout, while installing revetments that were sympathetic to the needs of fish, small mammals (particularly water voles) and to improve habitat for local birdlife.

The Group is open to anyone with an interest in, or love of the river. Membership is currently £10 per household per year. For further details please email info@rivermel.com
