Melbourn Primary School – gardening club

We are pleased to announce that following Melbourn village fete on 27th June 2009, we were able to raise a total of £117 for Melbourn Primary school for their gardening club, run by Mrs Lloyd.

Each of the 10 classes built a scarecrow and it was left to the public at the fete to vote for their favourites by putting money into dedicated flowerpots representing each of the scarecrows.

The overall winner, raising the most funds was Ruby class & their scarecrow will be going back to work on the schools vegetable patch. While Cobalt classes interpretation of the Rainbow Fish will be donated to Wimpole Hall’s walled garden, which already has a collection of scarecrows that the visitors enjoy. The remaining scarecrows will be working hard at St’ George’s Allotments.

We were blown away by the attention that our stall had as a result of this colourful display of scarecrows. In addition,  we had several gardening activities including:

  • Lucky dip – for garden and vegetable seeds
  • Guess the number of beans in the jar which allowed our lucky adult winner to receive a year’s subscription to Kitchen Garden magazine(kindly donated by the magazine) and a children’s prize of a Gardening set, (donated by Wellington & Barrow)
  • Our Allotment treasure hunt saw one lucky winner scope a £25 Tesco’s voucher
  • Plus, 100’s of plants at reasonable prices help people beat the credit crunch to grow their own at home.

The day also allowed us to make people aware of our new association and is pleased to welcome our new members. Remember, you do not have to have an allotment to be part of a larger community of people who ‘Grow their Own’.

A big thank you the team that made it all happen on the day, the sponsors, & especially to Mrs Lloyd, the teachers and children who worked so hard on their scarecrows. We hope the money we have raised will make a big difference to the school and your gardening projects.
